Advanced Care Directive
An Advance Care Directive is a document in which you set out what healthcare treatments you would like to have or refuse, should you be in a position where you are seriously ill or injured and unable to make or communicate decisions about your care and treatment.
An Advance Care Directive can only be made by you as an adult with decision making capacity.
Health professionals and family members have no authority to override a valid Advance Care Directive.
We cannot know what may happen in the future or predict what might happen with our health. Some people have definite ideas of how they want to live the rest of their life, including conditions or treatments that are unacceptable to them.
An Advanced Care Directive will clearly set out to your family and doctors what your wishes are when you may not be able to tell them yourself.
